Rising to the Top: Sajad’s Story (Afghanistan)
A perspective from Sajad Naderi, Customer Experience Associate at TD, on developing his career at the Bank. Sajad was hired by TD after attending the Jumpstart Refugee Talent (Jumpstart) 2023 Toronto Hiring Event. This is his story, as told to Jumpstart:
Before coming to Canada, Sajad Naderi worked in a financial institution in Afghanistan, in their Marketing and Corporate Communications departments. When he arrived (to Canada) in late 2022, Sajad had seven years of experience in the banking industry and an MBA. But like many refugees, looking for work in his new home country was not without its challenges.
“It was hard to stay motivated during the process,” says Sajad. “It was really tough, and I coped by staying connected with support networks, seeking advice, and maintaining a positive mindset.”
After learning about Jumpstart – a refugee led non-profit organization – Sajad found the support, resources, and advice he needed to hone in on his career-hunt. This included his selection as a candidate for the Jumpstart 2023 Toronto Hiring Event.
“Going into the Hiring Event, I felt a mix of nervousness and excitement,” says Sajad. “I felt confident that I would make it because I knew my potential.”
Sajad may have had the right mindset going into the Hiring Event – an event that involves prescreened candidates embarking ton face-to-face interviews with potential employers – but he also put in the time and effort to help maximize his chances at success.
“The interviews went very well, thanks to preparation about questions that are common to most prospective employers and spending some time to research and understand the company culture,” says Sajad. “I had prepared myself by doing some research about TD, practicing common interview questions and updating my resume with the help of one of Jumpstart’s program managers.”
As a result, not only was the Hiring Event experience “relatively smooth”, in Sajad’s own words, but it also resulted in a job offer from TD.
“Leaving the Hiring Event that day, I was hopeful and eager for the opportunity to contribute to TD,” Sajad recalls. “I remember when I got the call from the HR person that I got the job! I was in Quebec City for vacation, and excitement and gratitude filled my thoughts.”
Since being hired as a Customer Experience Associate with TD, Sajad says he feels renewed.
“My life has been fulfilling. Being employed has positively impacted me personally, boosting my confidence and sense of belonging,” says Sajad. “Adapting to the new work culture required adjustments, but I appreciate the challenges and opportunities for growth.”
In January 2024, a month after being hired, Sajad was recognized for his service and contribution at TD, and he was named as one of the top performers in delivering customer experience at his TD Branch in Mississauga.
“I felt a great sense of accomplishment and gratitude for that recognition,” says Sajad. “I attribute that early success to my dedication, strong work ethic and the support of my colleagues.”
Moving forward, Sajad is optimistic about his future with TD.
“In 5-10 years, I see my career path evolving within the Bank – leveraging my MBA and banking expertise to take on more responsibilities and help contribute to success at TD.”
