Sahel Zreik

At the heart of Jumpstart Refugee Talent is a community of individuals driven by resilience, compassion, and a commitment to empowering newcomers. One such individual is Sahel Zreik, a longstanding board member of Jumpstart Refugee Talent, whose personal journey and professional dedication exemplify the spirit of the organization.

Forging New Paths

Sahel Zreik was born and raised in Syria, where he completed his Bachelor of Economics. Driven by a desire to avoid mandatory military service and seek better economic opportunities, Sahel moved to Qatar, where he worked as an accountant for a construction company for over five years. During this time, he pursued Canadian immigration, and in 2010, he finally made the leap to Canada.

“My journey after arriving in Canada was filled with ups and downs, much like the typical immigrant experience,” Sahel shares.

Upon arrival, he faced the challenge of adapting to a new environment and took on various survival jobs while pursuing further education. He completed a postgraduate certificate in marketing management and financial services at George Brown College. Despite the obstacles, Sahel was determined to build a meaningful career in Canada.

A Career in Credential Evaluation

Since 2017, Sahel has specialized in international credential evaluation—a field close to his heart. His work focuses on recognizing the education and qualifications of internationally trained professionals and enabling them to practice their professions in Canada. His roles at organizations such as World Education Services (WES), the Ontario College of Teachers, and now the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers, have equipped him with the expertise to support skilled newcomers in navigating the Canadian workforce.

“I’m responsible for evaluating whether individuals who did not complete a social work degree have equivalent education and experience to become registered social workers,” Sahel explains.

His work empowers internationally trained professionals to overcome barriers and achieve their career goals.

A Passion for Community Support

Sahel’s involvement with Jumpstart Refugee Talent began in 2015 during the Syrian refugee crisis. The influx of refugees motivated Sahel to support newcomers facing unimaginable challenges.

“I wanted to help because I knew how difficult it is to start fresh in Canada as an immigrant. I couldn’t imagine how much harder it must be for those who didn’t choose to leave their homes,” he reflects.

What began as a grassroots effort with a small group of volunteers quickly grew into a coordinated initiative. Sahel and the team visited hotels where newly arrived refugees were staying, gathered information, and connected them with employment opportunities.

“It’s inspiring to see how Jumpstart has evolved from those early days to the impactful organization it is now,” Sahel says proudly.

The Power of Flexibility and Innovation

When asked what sets Jumpstart Refugee Talent apart from other organizations, Sahel highlights its innovation adaptability.

“Jumpstart’s flexibility and willingness to adopt new ideas and technology are key strengths. Initiatives can be implemented quickly and efficiently when they align with the organization’s mission,” he explains.

This forward-thinking approach enables Jumpstart to respond swiftly to the needs of refugees and newcomers.

Memorable Initiatives and Lasting Impact

One initiative that stands out to Sahel is the Economic Mobility Pathways Pilot (EMPP), which provides refugees in resource-poor settings with the opportunity to immigrate to Canada with employment already secured.

“Programs like EMPP offer hope to refugees facing seemingly insurmountable challenges,” Sahel shares. “Knowing that they can move to Canada and begin a new life with a job waiting for them is transformative.”

Sahel also commends Jumpstart’s mentorship initiatives, where industry professionals guide refugees in navigating the job market.

“These programs not only foster professional growth but also instill a sense of belonging and empowerment,” he adds.

Growth and Future Aspirations

Reflecting on Jumpstart’s growth, Sahel marvels at the progress the organization has made since 2015.

“What started as a small volunteer-led initiative is now a robust organization with over 40 employees across Canada and an international presence,” he notes. “Jumpstart’s ability to attract and retain talented individuals is a testament to its strong mission and values. This consistency ensures a promising future.”

Sahel envisions continued growth for Jumpstart, particularly in expanding partnerships and advocacy efforts.

“Jumpstart has become a leader in refugee employment support and advocacy, inspiring other organizations to follow suit. I believe we will continue to innovate and positively impact even more lives.”

A Message to Employers

Sahel has a powerful message for employers hesitant to hire refugees:

“Refugees embody resilience. They have overcome immense challenges to reach Canada, and this resilience translates into a strong work ethic and adaptability.”

He urges employers to look beyond language barriers and focus on the unique skills and perspectives refugees bring.

“Hiring refugees isn’t charity—it’s an investment in talent and diversity. By empowering them, organizations gain dedicated, resourceful team members.”

Addressing Policy Gaps and Advocacy

Sahel also stresses the importance of government support for refugee resettlement programs. He acknowledges the ongoing refugee crises and calls for the continuation and expansion of initiatives that enable private sponsorship and resettlement.

“Canada needs skilled newcomers, and refugees have consistently demonstrated their ability to contribute economically and socially,” he asserts.

Final Thoughts

Sahel Zreik’s journey from Syria to Canada exemplifies resilience, leadership, and a deep commitment to community empowerment. His work as a credential evaluator and board member of Jumpstart Refugee Talent underscores the importance of supporting refugees as they rebuild their lives. Sahel’s advisory role as a Jumpstart board member, pave the way for a more inclusive and prosperous Canada.
