Team Spotlight: Omar

As a refugee-led organization, many of our staff have lived firsthand the same or similar experiences with the refugee clients we serve.

Our Spotlight on the Team series profiles those who work with Jumpstart, how their own lives inform the work they do, and their hopes for supporting the meaningful economic integration and collaboration between refugees, employees, and volunteers in Canada and globally.

This month, we shine the spotlight on Omar Salaymeh, a distinguished Jumpstart board member and co-founder, whose journey from a Palestinian-Syrian immigrant to a prominent figure in Canada’s business landscape is nothing short of inspiring.

Omar’s story began when he relocated to Canada at the age of 12, embarking on a path that would see him graduate with a degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Waterloo. Initially immersed in the realm of green energy and sustainable buildings for over four years, Omar’s insatiable curiosity and desire to cultivate ideas into tangible entities led him to pivot towards entrepreneurship.

His entrepreneurial voyage commenced with Bonfire, a govtech enterprise that was later acquired in 2019. Omar played many roles at Bonfire as the company grew, culminating in taking the helm as CEO. Subsequently, he co-founded Civia, a pioneering AI solutions firm focused on serving the public sector, where he presently holds the role of Chief Operating Officer.

Omar’s personal journey resonates deeply with his dedication to facilitating employment opportunities for fellow refugees. Through his pivotal role at Bonfire, he spearheaded initiatives such as facilitating the employment of the first global talent under the Economic Mobility Pathways Pilot program, bridging the gap between talent and opportunity.

As a member of Jumpstart’s board, Omar integrates his firsthand experiences and professional acumen to empower the organization. From curating client-centered events to fostering internal dialogues, his contributions are invaluable. Recently, Omar shared profound insights with refugee job seekers, drawing from his extensive leadership experience in steering a 150-person company.

Reflecting on Jumpstart’s trajectory, Omar envisions a future where the organization emerges as the quintessential refugee hub, advocating for their integration and empowerment across Canada. His aspirations extend towards nurturing programs that unleash the full potential of refugees in their adopted homeland.

Omar’s pride in Jumpstart’s evolution is palpable, evident from its humble beginnings as a Facebook group to its current status as a national entity boasting over 25 dedicated employees. With unwavering optimism, he anticipates further growth and impact in the years to come, fueled by a steadfast commitment to championing refugee rights and opportunities.
