Ask Me Anything: Real Advice for Refugee Job Seekers

Recapping Our July AMA Webinar with Insights from Refugee Professionals and Career Coaches

Welcome & Setting the Stage

Our latest Ask Me Anything (AMA) session kicked off with a warm welcome and brief delay due to a guest speaker joining late. Despite the hiccup, the energy was positive, and participants quickly filled the virtual room. This monthly series creates a casual, supportive space where refugees and newcomers can ask career-related questions and hear firsthand experiences from those who have navigated similar paths.

Key Themes from the Discussion

Transitioning Careers as a Newcomer

Precious Ezeanyika shared his journey  landing  his first job in Canada. He emphasized the importance of shifting mindsets, adapting to a new job market, and embracing transitional work while building long-term goals.

“It was tough, but we did what we had to do,” he shared. “The most important thing is to keep going.”

The Power of Networking

The discussion highlighted how one referral—just one connection—can change the trajectory of a job search. Multiple speakers reinforced the value of networking, joining events, and staying visible to employers and hiring platforms.

Precious said: “I got the job because someone took five minutes to hear my story and refer me. Human connection is powerful.”

Career Navigation Support

A recurring message was the importance of working with a career coach. One participant asked how to secure interviews and overcome application silence. The moderator recommended booking a one-on-one session with a career coach to identify gaps, refine job search strategies, and boost confidence.

“If your resume is not getting you interviews, it is time to try a different route—like networking or tailoring your story better.”

Audience Q&A: Real Questions, Real Support

Participants asked thoughtful and personal questions—from how to re-enter their professional field to navigating licensing barriers. Some expressed confidence in their ability to succeed in interviews but felt stuck getting through the initial screening stage.

Speakers acknowledged these challenges and reminded participants that while the system can be frustrating, persistence, support, and strategic effort make a difference.

Takeaways

  • Do not job search alone. Book time with a career coach to better understand your gaps and strengths.
  • Networking opens doors that a resume can not—use every opportunity to connect with others.
  • Be open to transitional roles, but stay focused on your long-term goals.
  • Refugee professionals have valuable skills. Sometimes, all it takes is one advocate to be seen and heard.
  • Keep showing up. Even when progress feels slow, every event, connection, and conversation counts.
  • More support is coming. Stay tuned for monthly AMAs and follow-up resources via email.

Thank you to all who joined and shared. We look forward to seeing you next month!
