Team Spotlight: Tatiana

As a refugee-led organization, many of our staff have lived firsthand the same or similar experiences with the refugee clients we serve.

Our series, Spotlight on the Team, profiles those who work with Jumpstart, how their own lives inform the work they do, and their hopes for supporting the meaningful economic integration and collaboration between refugees, employees, and volunteers in Canada and globally.

Earlier this month, we had the privilege of conversing with our esteemed board member, Dr. Tatiana Astray.

Tatiana, an Assistant Professor at the Lazaridis School of Business & Economics at Wilfrid Laurier University, brings a wealth of experience and expertise to our organization. With a Doctorate in Organization Studies from the Schulich School of Business, Tatiana’s journey is marked by accolades such as the Joseph-Armand Bombardier CGS Doctoral Scholarship (SSHRC) and notable presentations at conferences like the International Association for Conflict Management. Her professional journey spans education, marketing, and technology start-ups, where she has served in pivotal roles as an educator, researcher, and consultant.

When asked about her motivation for joining our board, Tatiana’s response resonated deeply:

“Jumpstart carries personal significance for me. As a child, I arrived in Canada as a political refugee. I am passionate about seeing refugees succeed, personally and professionally. Through my experiences, I’ve understood the profound influence that support, or its absence, can wield over refugee families. Having witnessed firsthand its transformative potential, I am committed to advocating for economic empowerment. It’s not only about individual prosperity but about uplifting entire families, paving the way for brighter future trajectories.”

Tatiana is a staunch advocate for reshaping the narrative surrounding refugees in Canada. She emphasizes that refugees bring invaluable international experience and knowledge that enriches our communities. Her vision extends beyond immediate aid to strategic planning and ensuring Jump Start’s long-term sustainability and growth. Tatiana’s keen business acumen informs critical discussions on resource monetization and organizational viability.

“We cannot effectively serve refugees if we’re not sustaining ourselves.”

Reflecting on Jumpstart’s recent achievements, Tatiana highlights the transformative impact of initiatives like the Economic Mobility Pathways Pilot (EMPP) program. She envisions even greater success through continued engagement with the federal government and the development of innovative programs tailored to refugee needs.

Dr. Tatiana Astray’s unwavering dedication underscores her role as a catalyst for refugee empowerment in Canada. Her invaluable contributions propel us forward in our mission to foster inclusivity and opportunity for all.
