A New Start: What Jumpstart Refugee Talent and Being Canadian Mean to Me

Today, on World Refugee Day, we stand united in recognizing the resilience and strength of refugees and forcibly displaced persons worldwide. This year’s theme, “Home,” resonates deeply with our mission at Jumpstart — to empower refugee talent and support employers with their effort to inclusive refugee hiring practice. By facilitating employment connections, we support the creation of meaningful job opportunities for refugees as they build new lives and establish a sense of belonging in their new communities across Canada. It is also for this reason that we held our World Refugee panel discussion, on June 19th, Enhancing Refugee Economic Inclusion: Learning Best Practices and Success Strategies.

For millions of refugees, the journey to safety and security often involves leaving behind everything they know and love. The concept of “home” becomes not just a physical place, but a deep longing for stability, dignity, and hope. At Jumpstart, we believe that meaningful employment is a cornerstone in the foundation of a new home. It offers not just financial independence, but also a sense of purpose, agency and inclusion in their new communities.

Through our work, we have seen firsthand how access to meaningful employment can transform lives. Refugees bring a wealth and diversity of skills, experiences, and perspectives that enrich our communities and economies. When given the opportunity, they contribute significantly, demonstrating incredible dedication and drive.

On this World Refugee Day, we celebrate the achievements of refugees who have overcome immense challenges to rebuild their lives. We honor their courage and the strength of their spirit. We also acknowledge the critical role that employers, community partners, and volunteers play in creating a welcoming environment where refugees can thrive.

However, our work is far from done. There are still countless refugees who face barriers to employment and integration. We call on governments, businesses, and individuals to join us in our commitment to provide refugees with the opportunities they need to make a home in their new communities.

Let us embrace this year’s theme of “Home” by fostering inclusive and supportive environments where refugees can find not only shelter but also the dignity of meaningful work. Together, we can create a world where everyone has the chance to call a place home.

Thank you for your continued support and dedication to making a difference in the lives of refugees. Please read more if you’d like to volunteer with us or make a donation

By working together, we can ensure that the concept of “home” becomes a reality for refugees around the world.
