Role Overview:
The Communications Manager for Jumpstart Refugee Talent plays a crucial role in shaping the organization’s public image, spreading its message, and engaging with stakeholders. The Communications Manager is responsible for developing and implementing strategic communication initiatives to promote the mission, activities, and impact of the organization. This role involves creating and managing communication strategies, overseeing media relations, producing content, and maintaining the organization’s online and offline presence. The Communications Manager will collaborate with various teams and stakeholders to ensure the organization’s message is consistent, impactful, and reaches our target audience. The role reports into the Director, Operations.
Core Responsibilities:
- Communication Strategy: Work closely with supervisor to develop and execute a comprehensive communication strategy that aligns with Jumpstart’s mission and goals.
- Media Relations: Build and maintain relationships with media outlets, journalists, and influencers to secure media coverage, interviews, and press releases.
- Content Creation: Create, curate, and edit high-quality content, including website, press releases, articles, blog posts, social media updates, videos, and graphics, to effectively convey the organization’s message.
- Social Media Management: Manage Jumpstart’s social media accounts, including content creation, posting schedules, and engagement with followers. Knowledge of SEOs is considered an asset.
- Event Communications & Support: Collaborate across departments to support the planning, promotion, and execution of events that showcase refugee talent and foster community engagement. Ensure consistent messaging and maximize visibility before, during, and after events through storytelling, branding, and media engagement.
- Brand Management: Ensure the organization’s branding is consistent and adheres to established guidelines in all communication materials.
- Stakeholder Engagement: Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to gather information and insights and promote engagement in Jumpstart’s activities.
- Data Analysis: Utilize analytics tools to track and measure the effectiveness of communication efforts, collaborating with supervisor to make data-driven improvements.
- Lead a small team of interns (1-2) who support the activities above
Essential Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing, public relations, or a related field (a master’s degree is a plus).
- Proven 5+ years experience in communications, preferably within the nonprofit sector.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong storytelling and content creation abilities.
- Proficiency in using communication tools, social media platforms, and content management systems.
- Knowledge of branding, design, and multimedia production.
- Ability to work collaboratively and build relationships with diverse stakeholders.
- Communications management and problem-solving skills.
- Familiarity with data analytics and the ability to use data for decision-making.
- Passion for the mission and values of Jumpstart Refugee Talent.
Desirable Experience:
- Lived experience as a refugee.
- Experience working with vulnerable communities.
- Proficient with online search engine optimization (SEO) and advertising.
- Experience working remotely.
