In Canada, winter brings shorter days, darker skies and quiet. This can feel peaceful for some, but for refugees it can make the job search feel heavier than it needs to. The cold weather, long nights, and staying indoors more often can increase feelings of loneliness and stress, especially when you are trying to build a new life.

At Jumpstart, we understand that feeling deeply. Our team is refugee-led and mostly refugee-staffed, so when you tell us you are tired, discouraged, or unsure of what to do next, we understand exactly what you mean. And one thing we want you to remember is this: you are not doing this alone.
We know how difficult it is to send out many job applications and not get a reply. We know how frustrating it is when employers ask for “Canadian experience” even though your skills and experience are strong. We know the pressure of trying to build a network from scratch in a place where everything is new.
That is exactly why Jumpstart exists.
We are here to support you with people who understand. We offer support in every step of the job search – from writing your resume to preparing for interviews to connecting you directly with networking and job opportunities. Our mentorship program also matches you with a mentor who can offer advice, listen when you need support, and help you make connections in your field. At Jumpstart we create community, so you do not have to face the job search alone. You deserve support, respect, and clear guidance as you rebuild your life.
Winter will pass, and so will this tough moment. But until things get easier, we want you to know that you have a community beside you. We see your strength and believe in your future.
As the holiday season arrives, we hope you find small moments of warmth, connection, and hope. From all of us at Jumpstart, we wish you comfort and togetherness in the weeks ahead.
