As an international student from China who has been studying in Canada for seven years, I know how overwhelming it can be to start a life in a new country. Leaving behind a familiar environment and adjusting to an entirely different lifestyle is never easy. The culture, language, education, and work systems are all different from home, and the journey is often filled with uncertainty and isolation.

Before joining Jumpstart

My understanding of refugees was vague. I assumed they would face the same challenges I did as a newcomer and imagined them to be delicate or vulnerable. Another part of my impression was shaped by stereotypes commonly seen on social media, which often portray refugees as unskilled or dependent. I did not even fully understand who could be called a refugee—let alone the depth of resilience and strength it takes to rebuild a life from scratch. But through my time with Jumpstart, I get chances to get more interaction with refugee talents who bring diverse skills, professional experiences, and fresh perspectives despite the challenges they have faced. My image of this community has changed profoundly.

Joining Jumpstart

As a student at the University of Toronto’s Munk School of Global Affairs and Public Policy, I learned about Jumpstart Refugee Talent through the school’s connection with the organization. Jumpstart works to empower refugees and accelerate their integration into the Canadian workforce by supporting them through employment readiness and employer engagement. As a newcomer myself, I understand how challenging and unfamiliar the job market can be in a new country, and I wanted to contribute my efforts to support others navigating similar transitions. I also saw this as a valuable opportunity to engage more closely with the refugee community, to move beyond headlines, and instead connect with real people and stories.

Now, as a communication team intern at Jumpstart, I have read many stories about refugee resilience and also had the chance to interview refugees and listen to their inspiring journeys firsthand. I could also help to share these stories more widely. These experiences have helped reshape my understanding of the refugee community—not as one of fragility, but of strength, determination, and full of hope.

What Does “Refugee” Mean To Me Now?

After reading stories like Nouran and Miral’s journey, I have come to see the refugee identity as one of resilience, strength, and unwavering hope. Nouran and Miral are two LGBTQ+ activists who moved from Egypt to Canada and now support individuals who have experienced assault and are fleeing violence, particularly refugees and members of the LGBTQ+ community. As they said, “We aim to provide the help that we lacked when we first arrived.” Their voices are always precise and full of purpose: “Our progress and current position are the results of our persistent efforts and courage to voice our needs and experiences, even when it was dangerous to do so.” Their decision to keep speaking up, even when it hurts, showed me just how powerful storytelling can be.

Another story that left a deep impression on me was Yaseen’s journey—from making sandwiches to working in digital marketing. His willingness to stay flexible and keep learning reflects the same resilience and hope. He is now my colleague at Jumpstart, using his story and experience to empower more refugee newcomers.

Some refugees have also started small businesses or become cultural vendors, bringing pieces of their heritage into Canadian communities. This not only allows them to share their identities and traditions, but also enriches the cultural diversity of Canada, developing a inclusive environment in local neighbourhoods. Jumpstart supports them through its online marketplace, showcasing their products as well as their strength, creativity, and determination to build better lives.

What connects all these individuals is their refusal to give up and the shared spirit of persistence that rises above hardship. To me now, being a refugee is not a label of loss or limitation, but a testament to courage, adaptability, and the relentless pursuit of belonging.
