Team Spotlight: Sahel Zreik’s Journey and Contributions to Jumpstart Refugee Talent

This blog was created based on content delivered by Joe Luangchaleun, Senior Manager, CIBC Bank, during a June 13, 2024, Ask Me Anything workshop.

These monthly workshops are part of Jumpstart’s ongoing commitment to engage with our clients and other job seekers with forced displacement experience. Ask Me Anything is designed to provide a platform where clients can openly discuss their career journey, seek advice, and address any challenges they may be facing.

Leading a Virtual Team

Joe Luangchaleun has been a senior leader at CIBC for nearly two decades, overseeing approximately 200 people across Canada (excluding Manitoba). Despite the geographical spread, he has successfully led his team virtually, demonstrating that effective leadership transcends physical boundaries. Joe’s approach involves clear communication, consistent support, and a deep understanding of his team’s needs.

Importance of Being Intentional

One of Joe’s key insights is the importance of being intentional in developing a positive culture. He emphasized that culture is what happens when the leader is not around. In a virtual setting, it’s crucial to establish a culture where team members feel trusted and valued, ensuring they perform at their best even in the absence of direct supervision. Joe believes that leaders must be overt and organized in their efforts to build and sustain this culture.

Leadership Philosophy

Reflecting on his parents’ experiences as refugees from Laos, Joe shared the struggles they faced in building a new life in Canada. His mother worked in hotels, and his father, a welder, had to start over in a new country. Growing up in Regina, Saskatchewan, Joe faced racism and financial hardships, experiences that shaped his resilience and determination. He resolved to use these challenges as motivation to succeed and make a difference.

Joe emphasized that the resilience he learned from his parents’ immigrant journey has been a cornerstone of his career. This resilience is crucial for newcomers and refugees as they navigate the complexities of starting over in a new country. Joe’s story illustrates that while the path may be challenging, it is possible to overcome obstacles with determination and hard work.

Advice for Newcomers and Refugees

Addressing questions from newcomers and refugees, Joe emphasized the importance of patience and resilience. He acknowledged the difficulties in securing a job without Canadian experience but advised newcomers to remain persistent. Building connections through networking, leveraging LinkedIn, and seeking referrals can significantly enhance job prospects.

Joe also highlighted the value of humility and a positive attitude. Newcomers often have extensive experience and qualifications from their home countries, but starting at an entry-level position in Canada requires adapting and proving oneself anew. Demonstrating a willingness to learn, taking on challenging tasks, and showing resilience will eventually lead to recognition and career advancement.

Joe shared practical advice on how newcomers can increase their chances of success:

  • Networking: Use platforms like LinkedIn to connect with industry professionals. Attend networking events and job fairs to build connections that can lead to job opportunities.
  • Patience: Understand that finding the right job may take time. Persistence is key, and it’s important to stay motivated even in the face of rejections.
  • Soft Skills: Focus on developing communication and interpersonal skills. These are highly valued in the Canadian job market and can set you apart from other candidates.
  • Certifications: To enhance your qualifications, consider obtaining relevant certifications, such as the Canadian Securities Course (CSC) for the banking sector.

Joe’s journey is a powerful example of how resilience, dedication, and effective leadership can overcome the challenges of managing a virtual team. His insights into building a positive culture, taking responsibility as a leader, and the importance of patience and networking provide valuable lessons for newcomers and refugees aspiring to build successful careers in a new country.

At Jumpstart, we are grateful for Joe’s inspiring story and the practical advice he shared, which will undoubtedly resonate with many of our members.
